Interview on Quit Binge Eating- episode 20, my story, in my own words

I had the awesome opportunity to answer questions on Podcast 20 at Quit Binge Eating by Alen Standish

 Alen's blog

If you have about an hour and want to listen to me chatting about my former binge/emotional/compulsive eating, this podcast is for you.

Usually, I feel like this Great Blue Heron. Okay, I'm short, maybe a little green heron. ;)

Sometimes I like to blend in like this dusky wing butterfly.

I'm so glad I did the podcast. It took a lot of strength, and I was pretty nervous.

I believe that by removing processed foods, I've not only found a good way to maintain, but a good way to keep from binge/emotional types of overeating.

I'm glad to have found the support of other bloggers who join me in eliminating processed foods and share about that. Thank you!

 Onward!

    1. Thanks, Norma! I'm so glad that you, Jane, and Vickie are also clean/no trigger eaters and blogging. I'm not sure where I would have landed had I not read your blogs and the archives.

  2. Karen, I absolutely loved our conversation and getting to know you better. You're an amazing person! I've already received feedback from several listeners saying they also love who you are and what you said and many are now checking into Paleo/Primal to see if that can help give them a plan to help with their eating. You're doing great things here. Great blog and very inspirational!

  3. That's great Alen. I think the non-processed food route, Paleo/Primal, plant based, or clean eating is totally under used for weight maintenance and stopping those bingy, emotional eating, and "mini-binges". Glad to tell my story. Thank you for your great podcasts. I've learned so much.

  4. I loved listening to the podcast Karen. I'm so thankful to have reconnected at this stage in our journey. I hope I can give you as much support as you are to me - I was really touched by many of the things you said. I think it is interesting that years ago we were in a similar mindset, and now years later I think we are, too, even though we are taking different routes. :-) I used to be so rigid about thinking there were "good tools" and "bad tools" and now I think that is just one more area I was too black and white, and judgmental. I'm glad as I've gotten older I've been FORCED to let that go, and open my mind to consider more range of ideas. It certainly has helped me personally, as well as hopefully made me a better support to other people I encounter.

And PS...you have a really nice voice on tape. :-)

    1. Aww, thanks Cheri. It's fun to have a few IRL people on the blog. It's funny how life changes. The older I get the more I get that. I know I'll have to keep changing what tools I use, so I figure I just need to keep the change mindset and an open mindset going.

Yes- a range of ideas helps, I think. good point. Thanks on my voice. I listened to a preview the night before and listening to my own voice did not "weird me out" too much. Whew.

  5. I was very touched to hear my name in your podcast.

I learn from you, every time you write (and now speak) because it reinforces what I know. Or you restate it in a way that adds clarity.

My 5 and 10 free weights, the floor, and I listened to your podcast Saturday morning. Sets of 50. The time went very quickly. I enjoyed every word.

    You did an EXCELLENT job.

  6. Oh my gosh Vickie- I meant to tell you I had name dropped you and I forgot. :0 I hope that was okay, what I shared. I named dropped several things/people- and the interview was long- there were some cuts as I expected.

Alen and I chatted for 3 hours (half was recorded). I got done at 10 pm PST on the recording day and I sweated so bad that I had to change clothes. Didn't realize how nervous I was. Alen is easy to talk to, so that helped.

Talking about the binge/mini-binge/emotional eating/trigger part of weight maintenance helps me tell my own story. It's a huge part of both weight loss and maintenance.

Feels good to come clean. Glad you got your work out in. I listened to myself Wed night at the gym, while I worked out and time flew by. I was smiling during part of it.

  7. Hi Karen, thanks for the support. I'll have to check out the podcast - I totally agree with eliminating processed food but still find myself grabbing for it (because of it's availability). Thanks again!

    1. Hi Lucy, yes- I spent a long time during the transition from loss to maintain trying to fine tune the less processed part. The biggest change up came when I did the Whole30 in Jan 2013. I had a bar habit- Lara Bar, Medifast Bar (not paleo in the slightest!), think thin bars (part of my off paleo).

I had to ditch all the bars for the Whole30. Switching over to unsalted nuts and remembering to pack food was key. And, it was hard. But, I broke the bar habit. Still a struggle to find unprocessed foods while on the go. Good luck!

  8. I look forward to listening during the week, Karen. I wish I'd read this blog before the previous one. I've pretty much written what you have, verbatim. Just a coincidence, i assure you, but even *I* am thinking (almost) plagiarism, when I seen your blog and my comment.

Apropos of blue herons, we have some land on the edge of our pond on occasion (probably hoping for a lunch of confused, semi hibernating koi) and it is always such a lovely surprise! I really enjoy seeing your photos.

  9. Thanks, dlamb. I appreciate your support. I love herons, so prehistoric looking. Fun to watch.

  10. Karen, I am delighted to have found your blog! My day was highjacked so I will treat myself tomorrow by listening to your podcast.
Good lord, one of my biggest failings: not reading and editing my posts, e-mails, etc., finding my mistakes later and being mortified! "when I seen your blog"!?!?! REALLY? YIKES! Now that my eating is under control and so is my wt., I will make that my next goal in life! Read the darn post before clicking "Publish".

  11. I can't wait to listen to your podcast--in fact, I am hoping to do so while husband-to-be and I are honeymooning in Hilton Head next week! The past two weeks have been very busy and a bit stressful, so I'm looking forward to walking on the beach there, listening to some maintainer wisdom, and doing some reading on the condo's balcony while listening to the waves.
